CoE Secretary General Jagland goes to Ukraine to help reduce tensions
Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland is leaving for Ukraine to help establish a dialogue to reduce tensions in the country, the Council of Europe told Interfax-Ukraine on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the secretary general's offer of assistance yesterday received a positive response from all sides concerned.
"The aim of the visit is to try to reduce tensions in Ukraine, a member state of the Council of Europe, and to see if a dialogue is possible with a view to finding a political solution to the crisis," the Council of Europe said.
It is expected that during the visit, which will take place on Wednesday, Jagland will meet with Prime Minister Mykola Azarov, Foreign Minister Leonid Kozhara and the leaders of political parties.
On December 5-6, Kyiv will host a meeting of foreign ministers of the OSCE countries. Ukraine's chairmanship of this organization ends on January 1, 2015.
