Ukrainians living in Portugal become influential there - Poroshenko

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko met with the Ukrainian community of Portugal in Lisbon and expressed confidence that Ukrainians living in this country have become influential there, the press service of the Ukrainian president has reported.

"The Portuguese president, prime minister and Portuguese government are reckoned with the Ukrainian community," Poroshenko said, adding that he heard only good words from these people about the Ukrainian community.

He said that Portugal had never earlier so decisively spoke in support of Ukrainian sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence. Since March 2014, the priority topic for the country has been retaining of unity of the European Union and solidarity with Ukraine.

Poroshenko said that Portugal was one of the initiators of sanctions against Russia due to annexation of Crimea, aggression in the east of Ukraine and the non-implementation of Minsk agreements.

"This has become possible thanks to your position, as well as throughout Europe. And this is one more thing which I want to thank for," he said.

The Ukrainian president said that active position of Ukrainians in Portugal allows seeing positive result of efforts of Ukrainian diplomats, Ukrainian soldiers and Ukrainian diaspora, among other things.

"There is no more important task that to retain the country – protect it from aggression and win, as truth is with us and God is with us," Poroshenko said.
