Poroshenko greets Merkel on election victory, discusses peacekeepers deployment in Donbas
Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko during a telephone conversation has greeted German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel on winning the elections and coordinated with her the approaches to implementation of the initiative to deploy a UN peacekeeping mission in the occupied part of Donbas.
"Stability of the whole of Europe depends on this victory," Poroshenko said and wished Merkel successful completion of the coalition talks.
The two officials also exchanged views on the development of the situation in Donbas and the state of implementation of the Minsk agreements, the Ukrainian president's press service reported.
"They coordinated approaches to the implementation of an initiative to deploy a UN peacekeeping operation in the occupied part of Donbas and the uncontrolled section of the Ukrainian-Russian border," the report said.
In addition, Poroshenko noted the need for immediate steps to prevent the execution of the so-called "court verdict" against one of the Crimean Tatar leaders Ilmi Umerov, and to consolidate international support to speed up the issue of the release of all Ukrainian hostages from Russian captivity.
