Organization of elections at Russian diplomatic, consular offices in Ukraine impossible

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has said that violation of international law by Moscow in connection with holding Duma election by Russia on temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine makes impossible the organization of elections by Russia in the offices of its diplomatic and consular services.

"Foreign Ministry of Ukraine expressed a decisive protest against plans to hold election on the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine - Crimea and Sevastopol," Ukrainian Foreign Ministry's Policy and Communication Department Director Oleksiy Makeyev told Interfax-Ukraine on Saturday.

He also said that these steps do not meet international law. It is violation of international liabilities taken by Russia.

"In this context, the organization of elections by Russia in the offices of its diplomatic and consular services is impossible," Makeyev said.

In keeping with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, Russian diplomatic missions are supposed to respect the receiving state's laws and regulations and not to use its premises in any manner incompatible with the functions of the mission as laid down in laws and regulations as well as in multilateral and bilateral international treaties to which the Russian Federation is a signatory, he said.

The Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada issued a statement on Thursday to urge the international community to refrain from any involvement in monitoring the elections to the State Duma on September 18 and not to recognize their results in temporarily occupeid Crimea and Sevastopol under any circumstances.
