EU backs Ukraine in security issues - Poroshenko

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has met with German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande and British Prime Minister David Cameron in New York City to coordinate positions ahead of a 'Normandy format' meeting due in Paris on October 2, an Interfax-Ukraine correspondent has reported.

"Very important negotiations have been held today with British Prime Minister David Cameron and German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel. Certainly, they were dedicated to security in Ukraine. We were assured of the EU's firm support for the Ukrainian standpoint, and it was said at both meetings that the Syria and Ukraine situations could not be mixed," Poroshenko told reporters after laying a wreath in memory of the victims of the 9/11 tragedy in New York City.

"There can be no bargaining" in the context of the Ukraine and Syria situations, Poroshenko said.

The Ukrainian president said he had also had a meeting with Hollande, which, the same as the meeting with the German federal chancellor, was devoted to preparations for negotiations in the 'Normandy format'.

"We also had a brief meeting with the French president on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session and I am confident that this resolute coordination will assist in the establishment of peace in Donbas," the president said.
