Poroshenko calls for extension of Russia sanctions over fake Donbas elections

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has said that the current sanctions against Russia should be extended following the country's decision to hold fake elections in Donbas.

"The president urged the world to continue and extend the sanctions against Russia due to its decision to carry out fake elections in Donbas," Poroshenko's press secretary Sviatoslav Tseholko said on Twitter.

According to the president's press service, during a meeting with the EU Political and Security Committee (PSC), Poroshenko said that the decision of the leaders of the so-called 'Donetsk People's Republic' and 'Luhansk People's Republic', which they took in coordination with Russia, to hold fake illegal elections on October 18 and November 1 may threaten the Minsk agreements.

"The Minsk process, which started on September 5, 2014, sustained a powerful blow by the fact of the carrying out of fake elections on November 2, 2014, and I would like to note the great danger which is being brought by the decision to carry out fake elections on October 18 and November 1," Poroshenko said.
