Police, army report civilian casualties in Mariupol shelling

Two civilians have been killed and six injured in shelling of the Sartan neighborhood in the eastern outskirts of Mariupol, the Ukrainian Interior Ministry department in the Donetsk region has said.

"It is known as of [Monday] morning that shells have hit four privately owned homes on Hromov, Krasnoarmiyska and Izvilista Streets. The terrorists' attacks inflicted injuries of varying degrees on six civilians - four men, a woman and a child," says a report published on the police department's website.

Ambulance services have reported a dead man found on Zaozerna Street, the department said. "As of 00:20 a.m. [on Monday], another deceased person - a girl of about 20-22 years of age - was found on Krasnoarmiyska Street. The girl's identity is being established," it said.

The sound of heavy gunfire was audible in Mariupol, lights went out for a few minutes on the eastern bank, and television service was not available for ten minutes in the city center on Sunday evening, August 16. Local media said self-propelled artillery guns shelled Lebedinske, according to the army, and Lebedinske and Sartan, according to the volunteers.
