Poroshenko, Merkel discuss humanitarian situation in Donbas

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko held a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel during which they discussed the situation in the Donbas, in particular the issues of humanitarian aid and energy supply.

Poroshenko Merkel stressed the need for the observance of the Minsk agreements by all parties as the path to a peaceful settlement. They noted the importance of continuing consultations within the tripartite contact group, as well as a special role of OSCE Ambassador Heidi Tagliavini, the Ukrainian president's press service reported.

"The Ukrainian president and the federal chancellor agreed to make further efforts to intensify multilateral dialogue on peaceful settlement of the situation in Donbas," the report says.

The German chancellor congratulated Ukraine on the successful formation of a parliamentary coalition and expressed the hope that the new government will carry out pro-European reforms.
