Ukrainian interior minister says series of terror attacks averted in Odesa

A number of young men contemplating terror attacks in Odesa have been apprehended, the Ukrainian Interior Ministry press service quoted Minister Arsen Avakov as saying.

Avakov said the detainees had tried to destabilize the situation in the city.

"The young men planned to carry out their plot during a demonstration near the Russian Consulate General in Odesa but the police detained them," the report runs.

The police seized explosive devices, one of which the plotters tried to bring to the demonstration site near the Russian consulate. The other two devices were found later, the minister said.

One of the devices "was built with technical competence and had a rather large capacity," the press service noted.

Avakov assured the people that the local police force and the Ukrainian Interior Ministry were set to provide law and order in the region.

Earlier reports said two young men were detained near the Russian Consulate General in Odesa on June 16 trying to bring a homemade explosive device to the demonstration site.
