More than 20 people were involved in an assault on a reporter in Kyiv in February in which the journalist was murdered, Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said on Thursday.

The group has at least five other murders on its record, Avakov told a news conference.

Viacheslav Veremiy, a reporter for Kyiv-based daily Vesti, was shot in the stomach in a predawn attack on February 19 and died of the wound in the hospital.

"The moment the car with Veremiy inside drove up, they assaulted that car and started beating him," Avakov told a news conference in Kyiv.

"And Mr. Krysin [one of the suspects], whom we have arrested, is giving evidence about how it all happened - they beat him with a bat and everything. At the decisive moment the murderer came out - we won't disclose his name yet, we're still looking for him, - and inflicted Veremiy with a fatal wound with a point-blank shot," the minister said.

He said evidence was being collected against "that group of bandits."

On Wednesday, Kyiv's Pechersky District Court ordered the detention of one of the suspects, a 40-year-old native of Donetsk region in the east of Ukraine who has lived in Kyiv for the last 11 years.
