Yanukovych to instruct PGO to study demolition of 'chumak's hut' on Shevchenko reserve

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych will instruct the Prosecutor General's Office to consider as soon as possible the circumstances of the demolition of a "chumak's [or oxcart driver's] hut at the Fatherland of Taras Shevchenko National Reserve.

"The work of the National Museum of Taras Shevchenko is currently in the active phase. At the same time, there was a lot of negative information in the media about this work. In order to establish the truth around the dismantling of the chumak's hut in the village of Moryntsi, I'll instruct the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine to verify the circumstances of the dismantling and make a legal assessment of this in the shortest possible time," he said at a meeting of the humanitarian council in Kyiv on Thursday.

Yanukovych said that in future local authorities should be extremely cautious when considering such issues.

"In future, I'm demanding that all regional governors act transparently during preparations for marking the anniversary [the 200th anniversary of Taras Shevchenko's birthday]," he said.

Some media reported earlier that an authentic "hut of a wealthy chumak," built in 1854, which was part of the Fatherland of Taras Shevchenko National Reserve, had been destroyed during reconstruction work. The building has allegedly been in disrepair over the last few years and visitors were not allowed to enter the hut.
