Ukrzaliznytsia, PKP want to offer competitive tariffs for Ukraine-Poland route in 2017/18 season

Ukrzaliznytsia and PKP (Polish railways) intend to approve mutually beneficial tariffs for the 2017/18 passenger train schedule that would be competitive compared to other means of transport in this direction.

Ukrzaliznytsia reported that the relevant protocol was signed last week by Ukrzaliznytsia Board Chairman Wojciech Balczun and PKP President of the Management Board Krzysztof Maminski after negotiations held on August 4 in Kyiv.

Balczun said that the Kyiv-Przemysl route and the tariffs became popular, and on August 24, 2017 Ukrzaliznytsia will launch the second Kyiv-Przemysl train pair, which will pass Vinnytsia, Khmelnytsky and Ternopil.

"We are interested to develop this progressive price policy when the railways adequately compete with buses," Balczun said.

The companies plan to introduce online sale of tickets for other trains going from Ukraine to Poland.

According to the statistics, in H1 2017, some 74,100 passengers were transported on the Ukraine-Poland route, and this is 2.5-fold more than in 2016.

Ukrzaliznytsia said that export cargo shipments from Ukraine to Poland rose by 2.6% in January-June 2017, to 4.438 million tonnes.

Meeting participants discussed the opportunities of attracting additional volumes of freight to Ukraine thanks to the implementation of the New Silk Way project, an alternative route for transporting cargo from China and Iran to Europe.
