Long-term relations between Ukraine and Israel should be based on parliament interaction - Knesset speaker

Speaker of Israel's Knesset Yuli-Yoel Edelstein says he believes long-term relations between Ukraine and Israel should be based on interaction between the two countries' parliaments.

"Parliaments [act] as representatives of the people, they may see a certain change in their individual composition, but the parliaments remain [as they are]. Those who really want to build real, long-term relationships on a solid basis between the two countries and the peoples must develop them through inter-parliamentary cooperation," he said at the forum, titled "Ukraine-Israel 2016: 25 Years of Diplomatic Relations: From Common Heritage to a Shared Vision," held on Thursday.

Edelstein noted that he was born in the Ukrainian city of Chernivtsi, and is the second speaker of the Knesset who has arrived in Ukraine. The previous visit of the Knesset's speaker was held 23 years ago, when this post was held also by an ethnic Ukrainian, Shevach Weiss.

He added he hopes the two countries' parliaments will boost their interaction, and invited Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Andriy Parubiy to pay a return visit to Israel.
