Heating companies cut gas consumption by 21.1% in six months – Housing Ministry

Ukrainian heating companies from August 2014 to January 2015 reduced actual natural gas consumption by an average of 21.1%, or 1.2 billion cubic meters, compared to the same period in 2013-2014, to 4.5 billion cubic meters.

This data was released by the Ministry of Regional Development, Construction, Housing and Utilities Services, with reference to daily monitoring and analysis of information by Naftogaz Ukrainy.

"The situation is due to objective factors, major of which were a sharp decline in the average daily air temperature in Ukraine since the beginning of the heating season, since the second half of October last year. And this situation intensified during November and December," the director of the ministry department for housing policies Serhiy Kushnir said.

He said that despite such significant indicators of natural gas savings by heating companies, enterprises have not fully complied with the established limits, which suggest a reduction in gas consumption by the end of the heating season of 30%.

According to the ministry, in August 2014-January 2015 to August 2013-January 2014 the highest levels of reduction in natural gas consumption were seen in Dnipropetrovsk region (33%), Volyn region (27%), Zakarpattia region (24%), and Zhytomyr region (23%).
