Ukraine, Japan in May could finish audit of two TPPs to upgrade plants

Ukraine and Japan in May plan to finance a joint audit of Burshtyn and Trypilska thermal power plants (TPPs) for their possible modernization, First Deputy Energy and Coal Industry Minister Yuriy Ziukov has said.

"The audit will be conducted, after the audit concrete decisions on modernization and crediting will be made at the end of May," he said at a press conference after the Japanese-Ukrainian seminar on energy security held in Kyiv on Tuesday.

He said that the Japan Coal Energy Center and the Japan Research Institute will take part in the audit.

"Now the plants' documents are being studied, and a feasibility study is being drawn up to define the cost of the project, the period of its realization and the conditions of financing," he added.

He said that along with the modernization of the plant in part of the application of clean coal energy solution and reduction of emissions, Ukraine and Japan plan to discuss the possibility of reconstructing thermal powers plants using advanced Japanese solutions to switch from anthracite coal to gas coal.
