Britain freezes $23 mln received from Ukraine

The UK authorities have ordered the freezing of $23 million received from Ukraine, the Deutsche Welle radio station reported on Tuesday.

Britain's Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has opened a criminal investigation into possible money laundering associated with corruption in Ukraine, reads the report.

An international conference to be held in London on Tuesday will focus on the confiscation of money illegally withdrawn from Ukraine during the tenure of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.

The asset recovery talks will be hosted by British Interior Minister Theresa May, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov, as well as representatives of major international financial institutions.

Several European countries, including Switzerland, Austria and Liechtenstein, had earlier frozen the accounts of some former Ukrainian politicians and businessmen on suspicion of embezzlement and money laundering.

The list includes Yanukovych, his son Oleksandr and 18 other former senior officials, the report says.
