Yanukovych: Ukraine invites Austrian businesses to talks with global oil and gas companies

Ukraine invites its Austrian colleagues to participate in negotiations with the world's leading companies on an increase in oil and gas extraction, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said.

"Ukraine is very interested in increasing oil and gas production," he said after extended Ukrainian-Austrian talks in Vienna on Thursday.

"Austria has such experience, and we are inviting Austrian companies to negotiations with such world leaders as Chevron, Shell, ExxonMobil, and so on. We're waiting today for Austrian businesses to hold such negotiations."

Austrian Federal President Heinz Fischer, in turn, said that Ukraine and Austria would certainly continue to develop cooperation in the energy sector.

He said that during today's talks the sides had also discussed the construction and operation of nuclear power plants in Ukraine.

Yanukovych said that Ukraine also supports Austria's initiatives in environmental issues that concern the operation of nuclear power plants in Ukraine.

"We are in serious consultations today," he said.

He added that Ukrainian companies are actively working on the development of alternative energy.

"These joint efforts by Ukraine and Austria are already giving an opportunity to get 'green energy' in Ukraine," Yanukovych said.
